The Mid-Autumn Festival is deeply intertwined with the story of Chang'e, the moon goddess in Chinese mythology. The festival celebrates Chang'e's ascent to the moon after she consumed an elixir of immortality, along with her reunion with her husband Hou Yi, who also resides on the moon.

Here's a more detailed look at the story:

  • Hou Yi and Chang'e:

Hou Yi, a skilled archer, is known for saving the world by shooting down nine of the ten suns that were scorching the earth. As a reward, he received an elixir of immortality, but chose not to drink it, wanting to share it with his wife Chang'e.

  • Chang'e's Ascent to the Moon:

An evil man, Feng Meng, tried to steal the elixir, and Chang'e, to protect it, drank it herself. The elixir caused her to ascend to the moon, where she became the Moon Goddess.

  • Hou Yi's Tribute:

Heartbroken, Hou Yi would prepare Chang'e's favorite foods, including mooncakes, and offer them to the moon in her honor.

  • The Mid-Autumn Festival:

The Mid-Autumn Festival is believed to be a celebration of their reunion. People offer food and mooncakes to the moon, seeking blessings for a bountiful harvest and family harmony.
